First grade is an exciting learning year for six and seven year olds, and First Grade Sunday School at Second Baptist Church offers a variety of experiences and opportunities for first graders as they begin to learn about God and their relationship with God.
Experienced teachers offer the children a hands-on approach to Bible learning. In addition to hearing a Bible story, talking to God through prayers, singing Bible songs, and committing Bible verses to memory, first grade Bible learners participate in activities designed to help them understand and remember Bible lessons and how they apply to their daily lives. Simple craft projects to make and take home with them are fun lesson reminders or ways that they can retell the Bible story to others. Specially designed games reinforce events and themes from the lesson and allow the children to move around during story time.
Each Sunday, children are given a take-home paper which serves as an excellent tool for parents to continue the Bible learning at home. Included in the take-home paper is a review of the story, a game, and often a devotional. A number of different publications are used in preparing the weekly lesson for first graders with an emphasis on the Lifeway curriculum.
First Graders continue their learning about God and his Word throughout the summer months when school is out and they are preparing for second grade. In the summer first grade Sunday School program, children are given the opportunity to commit to memory all the books of the New Testament through a fun song they are taught.
