Jud was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Onnie Jennette Nixon. He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Nixon Lee of Henrico Co.; a son, David Judson Nixon; daughter-in-law, Diana Via Nixon; two grandsons, Daniel Judson Nixon and Thomas David Nixon, all of Gum Spring; a sister, Juanita Nixon Daughtry of Suffolk; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great in-laws and special friends.
He was born in Danville, and at an early age his family moved to Suffolk. He attended Suffolk schools where he was named to several all-state football teams. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. On discharge he attended the College of William and Mary, receiving a B.A. in Business Administration. While a student he married Onnie. He also played on the football team. He also received a degree in agriculture from VPI&SU.
He worked for Sinclair Refining Co. and then Pure Oil Co., which merged with Union Oil Co. of California, now UNOCAL, from which he retired in 1985.
He was active as a leader with Boy Scouts for 14 years, a charter member and past president of the Richmond West Breakfast Lions Club. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, the Lodge of Strict Observance No. 207, AF&AM, the Scottish Rite, and the Tuckahoe YMCA. He was an accomplished woodworker and gardener.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 21, at at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment at 3:30 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Baptist Church, 9614 River Road, Richmond VA 23229.
