Died: March 22, 2005

He is survived by his wife, Helen Tierney Hatch; a son, Robert Norris Hatch, Jr., and his wife, Kimberly, of Dallas, Tex., and one grandson, Robert N. Hatch, III, of Columbus, OH.

A native of Disputanta in Prince George County, Mr. Hatch was the youngest of eight children. He graduated from Disputanta High School in 1931, moved to Richmond, and joined the mortgage loan department of Life Insurance Co. of Virginia. Five years later, he went to work for General Motors Acceptance Corp. in Richmond and also attended night courses at the U. of Richmond. Though he never graduated, those classes began his career because a professor's suggestion led to his move to the Bank of Virginia, and was transferred to Norfolk. His banking career was interrupted by service with the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, and again during the Korean conflict, after which he continued working for Bank of Virginia. In 1969, he became chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of Virginia - Peninsula. Three years later, he moved back to Richmond and became vice chairman of the company.

During the 1970s, Mr. Hatch oversaw the consolidation of the company's 17 banks into one corporation and he became president of the corporation in 1978. He retired in 1980.

Mr. Hatch held numerous positions in various community and civic organizations in Norfolk, Newport News and Richmond. He was a director of the Peninsula Family Service, the Peninsula Industrial Committee and the Hampton Roads Maritime Association, in addition to the Norfolk YMCA and Cerebral Palsy Center. He is a past president of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and Norfolk Toastmasters Club, and was active in United Communities Fund drives and in the various Chambers of Commerce and civic associations. He was a past member of the Commonwealth Club, an active member of the country Club of Virginia, and served on the board of governors of United Givers Fund.
