Garnett James "Skeeter" Gilman

Mr. Gilman, 96, of Richmond, passed away March 10, 2008. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Anna Bourne Gilman; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Percy L. Gilman; son, James L. Gilman; brother, William C. Gilman; and uncle, Garnett J. Gillman. He is survived by his son, Thomas C. Gilman; cousins, Richard Floyd Gilman, Joseph E. Spain, Barbara Owen Pettit, Linda Gilman Price, Alvin W. Dyer, Jr., and Robin Curtis Minton; sister-in-law Estelle Jeter Bourne; and special friends, Sally Twidell Bagley, Buddy and Charlotte Reams, Vera and John Davis, Aleatha Johnson, Doug Martin, (former Post 1 player) John O'Connor (UR 3B 1977-1980), Maria and Eugene Kastelberg, Susan C. Schaar, Nancy and Emory Rohdes, Jim McKenna, Kathy Willey, Greer Jackson, Chuck Boone, Bary Barnum, John Rasnick, Merle Glidewell, Sonny Pettit, Mary Moore, Barry Gibrall, Patsy Strollo, Gwen Bailey, Dick Foster, Rose Atkins, and the Beth Shalonm staff.

Skeeter was a three-sport star in football, basketball and baseball at McGuire's University School in Richmond. The 5'5" 152-pounder played 15 years of semi-pro and amateur baseball in the area and was a member of Second Baptist Church, the Masons, Acca Temple Shrine, and was the owner of Gilman Plumbing and Heating from 1941-1980. Before that, he worked for the City of Richmond in the Gas and Utilities Department and served on City Council from 1944-1948.

One of Skeeter's passions was coaching baseball, and he led the Tuckahoe Little League to their first State Championship in 1959 and coached three Post 1 American Legion teams to State Championships.

The family will receive friends at Bliley's Centeral, 3801 Augusta Ave. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held in Hollywood Cemetery, in the Mausoleum, on Wednesday, March 12, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fr. Adrian W. Harmening Education Fund, Attn. Advancement Office, 304 N.
