He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bigony Edmonds, and by his sons John W. Edmonds, IV, of Milan, Italy, and David C. Edmonds of St. Louis, MO. Another son, Meade S. Edmonds, died in 1983. He also is survived David's wife, Jean M. Edmonds, and by three grandchildren, Andrew, Lindsey and Allison, of St. Louis. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Franklin S. Edmonds of Franklin.
He originated from Accomac, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and graduated from the University of Richmond in 1953 with a degree in political science, followed with a law degree from T. C. Williams School of Law in 1956. He was a fourth generation alumnus at U.R. and was followed there by sons John and David. Also, he served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Richmond from 1971-1975.
After working for Virginia Carolina Chemical Company, he joined the predecessor to the law firm of Troutman Sanders, L.L.P. During his years of practice, he served as general counsel for the Virginia Bankers Association and for the Virginia Mortgage Bankers Association. He was involved in most of the banking legislation in Virginia since the early 1960s until his retirement in 1995 from what then was known as Mays & Valentine.
Jack served on the board of directors for William Byrd Press, predecessor to Cadmus Communication Corporation. He authored two books on the Uniform Commercial Code of Virginia. He also practiced in the areas of will and estate litigation, and was a president of the Richmond estate Planning Council.
He established a scholarship at U.R. in honor of his parents, John W. Edmonds, Jr. and Katharine S. Edmonds. His father had been a trustee there for 30 years.
Mr. Edmonds was a member of Second Baptist Church where he was active and had served in many capacities, including as a deacon and member of the finance committee, also teaching Sunday School.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. at Second Baptist Church on Thursday May 22. A memorial service will be held at Second Baptist on Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m., with interment at Edgehill Cemetery in Accomac, Virginia, at 3:30 p.m., where he will be buried next to his son, Meade.
