He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Calfee Davis; three daughters and their husbands: Linda and P. Michael Roane, Sandy and John T. King, and Jane and Richard W. Payne, of Chester, NJ; seven grandchildren: Melissa Reynolds, Amy Fuqua, Michael Roane, Sandra Andrews, Talley King, Blair Payne and Tyler Payne; and one great-granddaughter: Morgan Fuqua.
Above all, he was a devoted, loving family man. He adored his wife, fondly referring to her as "sweetheart." He was very proud of his three daughters and treasured the moments that brought all of them together. Some of his happiest times were spent with his entire family each summer at the beach in North Carolina. He constantly bestowed gifts of encouragement to his grandchildren and great-grandchild, never asking anything in return. At his and Dorothy's 60th anniversary party one month before his death, he left his family with his final speech and most important lesson. He pointed around the room and said "Family is the most important thing, my greatest accomplishment." He has left behind a lifetime of memories that each of his family members will hold dear to them for the rest of their lives.
He had retired from the practice of law at McGuire Woods after many years as a senior partner there. He was for many years considered the premier tax lawyer in Virginia. He was a graduate of Concord College in Athens, W.Va. and of the T. C. Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond, where he taught a tax law class for many years.
During World War II he trained landing craft groups and served as a landing craft driver.
Burial in Hollywood Cemetery will be private.
