Second Baptist Church provides two weeks of shelter, one during Christmas week and one during the summer months, for the Single Adult programs of CARITAS in Spence Hall. Together with 180 other congregations around Richmond, Second Baptist Church will enable CARITAS to offer shelter for the Richmond homeless every week in 2007-2008.
Through this ministry, Second Baptist not only provides an air conditioned or heated room and a safe place to sleep, but also fellowship, bible study, clothing, breakfast, lunch, dinner, showers and take-home laundry service for our guests. The homeless men and women we serve are able to save funds during their stay and get the help they need so that they can move toward their goal of self-sufficiency.
Jamie Mitchell and Lisa DeWitt were the CARITAS co-chairs in 2007-2008 and were responsible for communication, raising homelessness awareness, administration, and leadership of this ministry.
In addition, a CARITAS team of Second Baptist members is assembled for each week of shelter to oversee volunteers and the different areas of service. Volunteers are needed for each area of service including: set up and take down, laundry, breakfast, lunch, dinner, cookies, activities, Parish nurse, showers, overnight hosts, donations, decorations, and facilities.
