Vision Statement for Second Baptist Church 2009 – 2013: We envision Second Baptist Church as a growing, gospel-sharing congregation, with expanding multi-site ministries and partnerships. We will provide relevant Bible study to encourage community and discipleship for children, students, and adults, enabling them to develop a transformational faith in Jesus Christ. We will also reach out cross-culturally to various ethnic groups, through local and global partnerships, striving to further Jesus Christ’s mission on earth.

Metro Richmond at Prayer Week of August 5: Pray for the Workplaces and Businesses of Metropolitan Richmond.

Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and towork for his good pleasure. (Phil 2:12-13)

We pray for the workplaces and businesses of Metropolitan Richmond: For safe, respectful work environments, healthy work ethics and attitudes, and sufficient salary and benefits for all workers.

In the Military:  We want to pray for those from SBC involved in the military and their families.  (Please let us know if you or family members of SBC are away serving our country.)  Names known to us right now are Michael Hardy, Brett Prillaman (home for 2 weeks), Elliot Starke, and Russ and Carol Starke's son-in-law, Capt. Kainoa Paloma.

Go Ye…Please be in prayer for these ministers who grew up out of SBC: Rev. Rob Brooks, Asst. Pastor at Horizon Community Church, Palmdale, CA, going to Univ. Bible Church in Westwood, CA; Rev. Rob Dawson, Sen. Pastor at First B.C. in Petersburg, VA; Rev. Lisa A. Hampson, Adult Education Discipleship at Commonwealth Chapel, Ric, VA; Rev. Curt Kruschwitz, graduated from George W. Truett Seminary at Baylor Univ. last May and is currently working as the College Minister, First B.C., Waco, TX; Alan Miller, Min. of Music & Worship at Orange B.C.

THANK YOU

Thank you for the prayers, calls, cards and concern shown to our family during our son, James H. Massey, III’s, recent double heart bypass surgery. He is getting stronger each day. Please continue to pray for his complete recovery. Our sincere appreciation for being such a caring church family.

South Africa Letters: If you are interested in sending a letter to the children in South Africa, there will be a basket in the FLC Commons until WED, 8/19. Due to very limited space, all correspondence should be in a letter size envelope.

Passport Youth Mission Trip: In July, our youth went to Passport Choices at Wingate University, in Wingate, NC. Similar to Passport Missions, Choices is a week that blends all of the experiences of camp and missions into one program. Throughout the week the Passport staff (including our own Ginny Richardson) led us in worship, songs, Bible studies, recreational activities, evening programs, mission sites and classes. Passport Choices is unique in that our students were given the opportunity to choose from seven different tracks for the week, which included traditional local mission work and community outreach, but also included a cooking class – led by Ginny – an environment class, a theatre class, and others. After arriving, our students selected their ’choice’ for the week. Most of our students chose to work with young children at one of the community outreach sites.

The highlight for the week was undoubtedly the 1980’s themed prom dance. Our students (adults too) represented with some incredible outfits!

The theme this year was [re]mix, each day the students learned that God wants to [re]create the stories we tell and the lives that we live, and even though we sin, through Christ we are given a [re]do. But in order to live differently, we have to [re]think and then [re]act. Our students really connected with these themes and God was clearly moving in their lives.

Get to know … Bev Dillard: Whether it is helping at Oregon Hill camps, mission trips, Vacation Bible School, or directing the church’s English as a Second Language ministry, and more, Bev Dillard has been there.

To quote Proverbs, she does not “eat the bread of idleness.” A native Richmonder, Bev joined SBC 37 years ago. She’s lived all over (the city), north, south, east, and west, where she and her husband, Parker, still live and reared their four sons. They now have three grandchildren.

Through WMU (both Women’s Missionary Union and World Missions Unlimited), Bev found ways to live out her faith while meeting many needs — an illiterate adult wants to read, a woman in the Oregon Hill neighborhood wants to learn to sew, newly-arrived international adults seek ways to learn and use English. For 15 years, Bev directed the ESL program at Second Baptist, now so ably directed by Martha Turner.

Bev and other women of the church, including Nancy Elliott, and Marie Piper, worked in ESL at Westhampton Church as part of their WMU involvement. When they saw the need for this ministry and the need for more space, they came back saying our church should be doing ESL. In a joint venture with River Road Church (Baptist), the first ESL school year here opened in 1989. Bev accepted the role of director—ordering the books, enlisting teachers, organizing schedules, setting up placement assessments on new students, arranging for childcare, and assigning students to the appropriate class for their level of English comprehension. Over the years, thousands of students have studied English, received Bibles in their heart language, had opportunities to hear the gospel from teachers and at celebrations like the annual ESL Christmas party. Martha Turner’s leadership has taken ESL on to expansions in many areas of service.

Today, Bev is active with WMU projects and is president of the Helton-Knight Sunday School Class.

Pastor’s Paraphrase: Greetings from The Netherlands! As I write this on Monday, I have been here for a week, attending the Annual Gathering of the Baptist World Alliance. It concluded on Saturday, and Beverly and I are now enjoying a few days of vacation before returning on Wednesday, August 5. The Netherlands (a.k.a. “Holland”) is a flat land of windmills, canals, livestock, bicycles, flowers, dikes, and a few Baptists!

The Baptist movement actually began in Amsterdam four hundred years ago when John Smyth baptized himself by pouring water (not immersion) over himself. He then did the same to his small group of refugee English Separatists. Since Baptists started in Holland, it seemed good to have our annual gathering of the Baptist world family here this year to help celebrate our birthday. We actually met forty miles out of Amsterdam in the city of Ede, but we went in one afternoon for a celebration in Amsterdam.

The BWA has been a very important part of my ministry. I have grown spiritually, relationally, missionally and intellectually by my involvement with our international Baptist family. I serve in several areas of the BWA life, but due to changing churches, I have not been involved for several years. I am renewing my commitment and involvement, and I hope to bring Second Baptist into active partnership with this vibrant part of our family.

Next summer the BWA Congress, which only meets every five years, will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Beverly and I are hosting a trip and hope to take a good group from our church. This will be one of the most inspirational worship and study experiences you will ever have, and afterward we will have the option of some site-seeing. Please let me know if you are interested. Soon we will have an informational meeting.

Virginia Baptists have been very important in the life of the BWA. Our own pastor, W.W. Landrum, was very influential in the formation of the BWA. Our state paper, The Religious Herald, was also important in that process. Falls Church, VA, has been home to the BWA for much of its history. And Virginians have provided strong leadership and funding for this international ministry. At this Annual Gathering Dr. John Upton, General Secretary of the Baptist General Association of Virginia, was nominated to serve as the President of the BWA from 2010 – 2015. This is the greatest honor Baptists can confer and we in Virginia Baptist life share in John’s honor.

As Beverly and I have driven the highways of The Netherlands for a few days, we have been struck by the visage of their tall-steepled churches. The land is so flat and the churches are so tall that the steeples are their most prominent landmark. Several times, as we have tried to find our way, we have simply looked for the steeple on the horizon or above the buildings in the village. I pray that God may help Second Baptist to be such a landmark, helping all of us to find our way to God and each other! I am excited to return home in a few days with a deeper desire to serve the Lord through our church.

With a pastor’s love,
Craig A. Sherouse
